What's Inside a Flight Kit? Basics of Pilot Training

For student pilots, a flight kit is an essential companion during training. It contains key tools that help with communication, navigation, planning, and safety. Here’s a quick look at the typical contents and what each item is used for:

1. Pilot Headset

A pilot headset is crucial for clear communication with air traffic control and other aircraft. It also protects your hearing from engine noise during flight.

2. Pilot Logbook

This personal record keeps track of every flight, including hours flown, types of aircraft, and endorsements. It’s a legal requirement and an important tool for career progression.

3. Fuel Tester

Before every flight, pilots use a fuel tester to check for water or contaminants in the aircraft’s fuel tanks—an essential preflight safety step.

4. WAC Charts / Navigation Maps

World Aeronautical Charts (WAC) or sectional maps help pilots plan routes and navigate visually (VFR). They show topography, airspace boundaries, airports, and landmarks.

5. E6B Flight Computer

This manual tool, often called a “whiz wheel,” helps pilots calculate wind correction angles, fuel burn, ground speed, and other flight planning essentials.

6. Rotating Plotter

Used along with navigation maps, the rotating plotter helps measure distances and angles to plan accurate flight paths.

7. Kneeboard

A pilot kneeboard holds charts, checklists, and notes on your leg, making it easy to access important information during flight without distraction.

8. Flight Bag

The flight bag keeps all of the above organized and ready for transport. It’s designed for efficiency, durability, and quick access in the cockpit.

These tools form the foundation of pilot training and help students build the skills needed to fly safely and efficiently.
